Controversial ad's

Controversial advertising is communication that is attention grabbing, shocking, offensive, inappropriate, unethical, thought provoking, humorous and emotive, and that pushes the boundries of social conditioning. Controversial advertisiements usually end up banned.

So why then do marketers produce such ads?
The objective of controversial advertisements is to break through the clutter, grab viewers attention, be remembered, and to create publicity.

But how can publicity occur if the advertisements get banned?
This is where e-marketing comes into play. Banned commercials are easily accessible through Youtube, email forwards, Facebook, blogs, and websites. Thus marketers are still able to achieve their objectives of breaking through the clutter, being remembered and creating publicity....and are able to do it much cheaper as they no longer have to pay for t.v time, magazine spots etc.

Seen any cool or interesting banned ad's?

  1. World Vision and other charity organisations walk this line a lot, they need to find a balance between attention grabbing and just plain wrong.

I really like what you are doing with this!

  3. what a great post. I couldnt agree more that banned ads work better online like Youtube,as they are cheaper, more expose rate, and they last longer.

  4. It seems ad man is teaching us something! I did one on this today also. I think it works a treat... Also, as people are becoming more de-sensitised, it looks like ads are becoming more controversial. I wonder what’s next..

  5. Thanks Josh. I do agree, used properly controversial ad's can be very effective, but there is a very fine line of whats acceptable and whats not, and the tough part is, whats acceptable to one person may be offensive to another.

Spyke, i liked your post comparing the 2 similar campaigns, but i really dislike the second ad.

Thank you Kenneth for the input. I liked your blog. One of my more recent posts is similar to your Youtube posts, you should check it out.

Emily, Ad man is great and very useful in terms of ideas for blog posts lol. I do agree with you about us becoming more de-sensitised to advertising. I too am curious to see where advertising will head in the future.
