Flash Mobs

The use of flash mobs is becoming an increasingly popular way of advertising. However, in order for these flash mobs to be successful, they rely not only on the word of mouth of the people present at the time of the performance, but also on electronic methods of marketing. The flash mob performances are usually filmed and placed on popular sites such as Youtube where the ads are left to run viral. Furthermore, it also relies on the people present at the performace to film or take photos of the performance and pass it along to friends in order to generate "buzz".

I think Flashmobs are a very effective and fun way to break through the clutter

Does anyone know any other cool flash mob clips?

  2. I've been in a couple of flashmobs, but not for advertising. It kinda breaks their main draw card which i reckon is to have some fun without any political or commercial motivation.

  3. That would explain why most of the clips i found on youtube weren't actually advertising anything. In which case, i think that it should be used more for advertising as its definately attention grabbing and creates "buzz".
So the flash mobs you were in Nick, where were they? and what did you have to do? Got any videos of them?

  4. Great first post, Michelle, with a good "call to action"!

Many of the flash mobs I've seen on YouTube are very subtely branded, such as the t-mobile one you embedded here. Notice the audience on their mobiles during the dance, with the logo only appearing at the end? Not too blatantly in-your-face, but still strongly connected to the entertaining content.

  5. I think one of the best flash mobs would have been the Nike Power rangers spoof. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDXCFUAhqW0
No real mentioning of the brand or product until the very end and it really does capture the viewer.
Pretty big laugh and even though i had no idea what they were talking about, i did end up sending the clip around.

  6. I dunno, they were cool 18 months ago but I'm starting to think too many people have done them and they're starting to get a bit lame.

Replicating what another brand has already done doesn't bring much to the table.

  7. Wags - I think the T mobile ad was done really well as the brand wasn't in your face, and the product actually suited the use of the flash mob (taking photo's/videos, sending them to friends and calling your friends about the flash mob). Other than that ad, ive only seen a small handful of branded flash mobs, and they aren't very good.

Martin - that was a very weird clip, but funny. Thanks for that!

Zac - I hadn't even heard of them 18 months ago, and im sure im not the only person. I still think they're really cool, but i do think its lame when they copy what others have done e.g. stand frozen, or dance to the same song. I have seen some really creative and different ones though such as the "human mirror" and pregnant break dancers lol.
